The Road Trip (pt 2)

We reversed from the driveway at 6am. Biancas new second hand toyota rally ute was packed up pretty high and was covered in ropes and tarp. It was still dark, yet the traffic of Cairns seemed to be getting ready for a very busy day.

If anyone has ever driven from QLD to the NT, they will know that the rest of this story is quite a boring one but there are a few things that i would like to share with you.

During our first leg, which happend to be from Cairns to Cloncurry (1200km) Bianca wouldn't stop with the persistant "I still can't belive we haven't seen a kangaroo yet" comments. I kept telling her to stop mentioning the damn kangaroos or we would create a kangaroo magnet. It was dark when we were about ten kms out of Cloncurry, i was driving and it was at this point i let down my 'thought bubble' barrier and started thinking 2 things to myself:

"It is very strange that we are yet to see a Kangaroo..."
and
"Wouldn't it suck if we hit a roo now..."

You all know what happened next but the sadness of it was that the Roo was no more than 1 metre away from the Cloncurry entrance gates. If we had made it through the entrance gate the lights and lack of flora would have guaranteed no roos jumping up and getting blended by the engine.

As you can imagine Bianca was distraught - fearing her new beloved car was destroyed beyond repair. I felt like like a marsupial killer and am still having repeats of the bone crunching sounds that just didn't seem to been shaken from my brain.

This killing spree continued along the Barkley Highway. Although the Roo was a one off event, i am a serial killer of birds and a locust mass murderer (these were so gross - it looked like it was raining and the car turned from blue to a lovely green).

So we obviously arrived home in one piece, and the car somehow managed. And that ladies and gentlemen concludes the road trip debrief...

The Road Trip (pt 1)

As you now all know, I have recently been adventuring in cairns. This trip was not for pure pleasure, I was there to do a job. I was to bring my beautiful younger bossy sister - Bianca - back to relaxed Darwin safe and secure...

Bianca came to visit for Christmas. She had been living in Cairns with her partner, Sam, for around four and a half years. Although her life and work achievements were many within this time span, after she had spent time with us in Darwin she expressed a desire to have youthful fun, and she explained that she felt as though she was aging before her time and she decided without regret that she would move back, by herself, to Darwin. The logistics of this return were as follows:

She would by a car and road trip it on her own...

Yeah right! Not on my big sister watch would Bianca be driving by herself from Cairns to Darwin. So, I volunteered my time and driving experience to assist her on the return.

WHOA! What a big week and a bit!

Hello peoples,

Well in the last week or so my moderately sized toosh has been grinding away at an exceedingly fast pace. There have been a few things that have happened to make this the case...

Firstly, Matilda turned one! Hurrah Matilda! Her Birthday party took place in the back yard of our new house with lots of family and friends. Matilda spent the majority of the day naked, which she way extremely delighted about, and in the pool, getting all the attention a one year old should get on their birthday. We realized, in all the social fun, that Matilda loves sharing her love. Any person that was under 4ft tall was afflicted with a whole bunch of Matilda birthday love.

As parents, both Brett and I were unsure of 'first birthday etiquette', but I think we did a pretty a good job at pulling it off... I have to say a very big thank you to Lisa-Marie and Paul for their help and support on Matildas big day and a super duper thank you to Brett, who was amazing. And me, well for those of you who know me will know that I had as much (if not more) fun as Matilda! I was so excited!!! The evening was spent on our verandah listening to the waves crash - yes waves in the top end - and having drinks and great conversation with some of the best people I know.

Secondly, have just returned from Cairns. I spent two days there, taking in the sites and sussing out the joint before the return road trip. It's small yet surprisingly busy. Everything is green and set up for the visitors it's economy tends to rely upon so much.
I visited Green Island, which is about a half an hour boat cruise from cairns. Although it is very busy it has sustained it's natural awe. I can now say I have been swimming with hundreds of jelly fish and lost what ever phobia I may have gained in my short stint with the translucent killers! I patted a turtle and saw a black tip shark that was 2 meters long!
Also Cairns officially has the best sushi in Australia - if you are going by Kalinda's food recommendations...

Thirdly, I returned from Cairns on a road trip, but I will fill you all in on the details in the next few days as I have run out of time. I will add pics then too!

Take care my friendly furs!
